The southern African four-member group 340ml is currently based in Johannesburg but has its roots firmly planted in Mozambique. The release of their first album in 2003 earned them critical praise, and opened the doors to a wide range of public performances. Titled Moving, the album was one of the most effortlessly evocative recorded in South Africa during 2003, casting a musical glow that speaks of hazy beach sunsets, languid afternoons and blissed out summer fun. AFRICAN JAZZ PIONEERS
Based in Johannesburg
The history of the African Jazz Pioneers stretches back to the 1950's, when jazz was the fashion and big bands were the name of the game. The late Ntemi Edmund Piliso, leader and founding member of AJP, nourished the group from their humble roots to their current international acclaim. The sound of the Pioneers derives from Marabi and evolved to include the instrumental sound of the big swing bands of Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. .MORE

AFRO BLUE
Based in Durban
Afro Blue has been performing together for some years and is led by Susan Barry on piano/keyboards and Philani Ngidi on bass. The band performs in and around Durban and Kwa-Zulu Natal, playing at festivals, shows, government and corporate functions, private parties and weddings. Their repertoire includes contemporary arrangements of jazz standards, Latin jazz, funk and fusion, party music (covers), South African jazz, contempory arrangements of South African songs, and original compositions. AFRO FIESTA

This popular Afro-Jazz / reggae fusion band have been headlining many Cape Town music festivals, and is a strong drawcard at local Afro-Jazz clubs, but they had humble beginnings... Back in the eighties band leader Mermans Kenkosenki felt he had to leave hisCongolese home town of Kinshasa in order to express himself as a musician. At the age of 19 he went to Angola, where he taught himself to play the drums and joined a struggling reggae band. More

AFRO FONQUE

The Quartet Babu uses Indian classical inspired composition with Jazz and Western classical idiosyncrasies. The compositions make use of Ragas and Talas as well as Jazz forms and harmonies. LOADING ZONE

Loading Zone started performing in Johannesburg, backing Brenda Fassie in 1990. Soon after, they were offered their first independent gig to perform at Kippies, at the Market Theatre. Soon thereafter they secured a residency at one of the funkiest clubs at the time, the Cotton Pub in Hillbrow. MASSEY QUARTET
Based in Johannesburg
The Massey Quartet is a group of educated jazz musicians consisting of male vocals, piano, bass and drums who produce a truly distinguished classic sound and style of jazz. The band, fronted by vocalist Andrew Massey, has a repertoire ranging from Brazilian bossa nova and funk to straight-ahead cool jazz with a strong vocal element. MELANIE SCHOLTZ GROUP
Based in Cape Town
Award winning songbird Melanie Scholtz has achieved praise in South Africa as well as internationally. Winning the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters competition in 2002 as Best Jazz Vocalist and performing the South African Anthem at the Presidents’ Cup in 2003 in front of a world audience of 1 billion people. Melanie Scholtz has performed on live Norwegian radio as well as part of a Music against Misery concert in Holland in 2002. She has worked with the cream of South Africa’s musicians; Jimmy Dludlu, Sibongile Khumalo and Judith Sephuma, amongst others. MORE

INSPIRED by the group Empire Bakuba, which ruled Zaire's music scene in the 1960's, Young Bakuba have brought Kinshasha's sound to Cape Town. Established in 1993 in Namibia, members spent the 1990's in Angola, before relocating to South Africa.
