SOUTH EASTER BAND

Based in Cape Town

The South Easter Band consists of some of Cape Town's Jazz legends. The full band (5-piece) consists of female vocals, saxophone, piano, double bass / bass guitar and drums. They are also able to form smaller groups (Quartet, trio or duo) consisting of various combinations of the availalbe instruments and members.

The band is fronted by pianist Gary Hendrickse. Gary gained experience in his early years playing with local dance bands from the Cape Flats and District 6 who specialised in playing music peculiar to the Western Cape, especially Cape Town. He eventually did jazz studies with the Berkley College of Music, Boston, USA and classical piano studies at the University of Cape Town. Gary still continues to play local music in addition to the wide repertoire he has at his disposal.

The rest of the band is made up by Basil Moses (bass), Soisoi Gqeza (vocals), Len Richie (sax) and Danny Butler (drums).

The South Easterns have an extensive repertoire to suit all tastes, and are capable of providing the perfect entertainment (from soft background music to dance music) for any occasion. The repertoire includes a wealth of jazz standards, as well as a wide variety of dance music styles such as rock 'n roll, Latin, Cape Malay, music for Jewish weddings, waltzes, sambas etc. They also play Italian music, French, Portuguese, as well as traditional Xhosa songs which is very popular amongst international crowds.
