The name Shanty is derived from the Irish gaelic "sean-tigh", meaning "old house". Early Irish immigrants to America (like the Kennedys) lived in the old parts of towns such as Boston, and so became known as "shanty-dwellers".
The band Shanty has been together for many years, and are the leading exponents of traditional Irish music in Cape Town . They also write their own material and perform a variety of folk music from other English-speaking countries.
Shanty has performed three times at the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, and every year for over a decade at the Community Chest Carnival, as well as at many fairs, weddings, fund-raisers, parties, pubs, etc.
The band members are :
Dave Williams - fiddle, mandolin, vocals.
Rob Anderson - vocals, mandolin, guitar, and bodhran (traditional Irish drum).
John Bolton - vocals, pennywhistles, bodhran and keyboard.
Larry Margolis - guitar, vocals, harmonica.
